Overview: Colon cancer is a growth of cells that begins in a part of the large intestine called the colon. Colon cancer typically affects older adults, though it can happen at any age.
Causes: It usually begins as small clumps of cells called polyps that form inside the colon. Polyps generally aren't cancerous, but some can turn into colon cancers over time. Smoking and family history of colon cancer can increase risk for developing colon cancer.
Symptoms: Blood in the stool or change in bowel habits can be symptoms. Doctors recommend screening tests like colonoscopies or stool tests to help prevent and detect colon cancer.
Treatment: Colon cancer is often treated with surgery. Sometimes doctors perform surgery, which may be followed by chemotherapy, radiation therapy, targeted therapy, immunotherapy or a combination.
