Using anthracyclines may cause the loss of heart cells. This can lead to a heart that pumps less blood with each beat, called cardiomyopathy.

Over time, the heart can become less efficient at moving blood through the lungs and body. These changes can occur with or without symptoms. The development of symptoms is called heart failure.
