How to Prevent RSV, Protect Your Heart

Getting the RSV vaccine is safe and the best way to protect both your lungs and your heart. The vaccine works and can:

  • Lower the likelihood of severe illness
  • Help prevent related complications, such as new or worsening heart issues
  • Reduce your chances of ending up in the hospital

Who should get the vaccine?

You should consider getting the RSV vaccine if you’re:

  • 75 or older and haven’t yet had the RSV vaccine
  • Between 50 and 74 and have heart disease or other health conditions that raise the likelihood for severe RSV

When to get the RSV vaccine

You can get the RSV vaccine any time, but the best time is late summer to early fall – before RSV starts spreading.

Unlike the flu shot, which you get every year, the RSV vaccine is currently just a one-time shot. You can also get the RSV vaccine with other needed vaccines in the same visit.

Talk With Your Doctor
Ask if RSV vaccination is right for you and how to best manage any symptoms if you do get sick.

Other steps to stay heart safe from RSV

If you do get sick with RSV, watch for symptoms. If you notice new or worsening chest pain, sudden breathlessness, palpitations, swelling, or other symptoms, call your care team right away.

Remember to take other steps to stay healthy. For example:

  • Wash hands
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick
  • Cover coughs and sneezes
  • Stay home if you are sick
  • Clean surfaces you touch
  • Continue taking your medications
  • Eat healthy and balanced meals
  • Stay active
