Medication Basics
Generic Name: Gemfibrozil
Brand Name: Lopid
Medication Class: Cholesterol Medication – Fibrate
Description
The fibrates help to lower triglyceride levels, which have been shown to contribute to cardiovascular disease when elevated. Patients with metabolic syndrome or diabetes may be at particular risk for high triglycerides. Fibrates also help to lower bad cholesterol (LDL), but are not as effective as statin drugs for this. Fenofibrate may be preferred over gemfibrozil due to fewer gastrointestinal side effects.
