Medication Basics
Generic Name: Ezetimibe
Brand Name: Zetia
Medication Class: Cholesterol Medication
Description
Ezetimibe is one of the newer types of cholesterol medications to be developed and works by blocking the absorption of bad cholesterol (LDL) in the gut from the food we eat. However, ezetimibe is less preferred for reducing bad cholesterol compared to the statin medications. Recent trials have not shown benefit by adding ezetimibe to statin drugs in reducing a certain measurement of coronary artery disease. However, ongoing clinical trials will help to define whether adding ezetimibe to statin treatment is truly beneficial.
