Medication Basics
Generic Name: Colesevelam
Brand Name: WelChol
Medication Class: Cholesterol Medication – Bile Acid Sequestrant
Description
The bile acid sequestrants are an older class of cholesterol medications and block the absorption of cholesterol from food. They are not as effective as the statin medications and should only be used as second line treatments for high cholesterol or if you are unable to tolerate statin medications. The bile acid drugs can also increase triglyceride levels, which may be harmful and can reduce the absorption of a number of different medications. Of all of the bile acid drugs, colesevelam causes the least amount of side effects, particularly gastrointestinal distress.
